Goodbye 2011, Hello 2012: A Look Back

My attempts at blogging are sporadic at best, but if I'm going to write something, now is probably the time I figure.  I know it may be a little cliche to look back at the past year as the new one begins and to then blog about it; however, I feel it is important in my own evolution as a quality human being so you're all stuck with it whether you like it or not.

2011 started out a stressful blur.

Imagine two of us attending school full-time and you get the picture.  Thankfully, JR graduated from Ohio Center for Broadcasting in February - with the most intern hours of anyone in his class and perfect attendance to boot - and things got a little less hectic.  Please note that I said, "A little."

Other than that, until May, nothing of note happened because all of my time was spent completing my practicum for my Master's.  Between teaching full-time (in a new subject area with 3.5 preps and a two-hour round-trip commute, I might add), attending two night grad classes, completing the work for said classes including a 40-page action research project, and the daily tasks of life, I was a hot, stressy mess!  My poor husband... oh who are we kidding? Poor me! ( I'm entitled to self pity here and there, I think.)

But May did finally come.  And with May came the completion of my Master's degree; I can now proudly say I hold a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction for Gifted & Talented Education from Cleveland State University.  I can even put M.Ed. after my name.  Sounds impressive, huh? :::holds head a little higher, sits a little straighter:::  I felt especially proud of all the work I had done when I thought about the fact that, on my dad's side (not counting my mom), I was not only the first person to earn my Bachelor's (in 2006), but the first person to earn my Master's.  If the degree wasn't something to be proud of (which it is), that sure is.

The rest of 2011 fell nicely into place after that.

I finished out the rest of my first year teaching Language Arts instead of Gifted & Talented, and felt confident that I had done well and had actually taught some of them something that they would remember and could use.  Then summer came, a summer without the craziness of taking multiple online grad classes like last summer; and while my big plans for Cleveland adventures didn't quite pan out, it was still an enjoyable summer that set a tone of accomplishment and change for the rest of the year.  Cue the highlight reel:

JR Gets a Job
After lots of work and lots of hoping and praying, JR was offered a promotions job at CBS Radio Cleveland; he would be working mainly to promote 92.3 and 98.5.  While not full-time, it's a good job with opportunities to make connections within the industry and we were both thrilled.  He also got to be on the ground floor of promoting a brand new station (due to a format change); he came on board right as 92.3 The Fan, Cleveland's only all-sports FM station, was being born.  He promotes the stations at some pretty cool events - Browns games, Bob Dylan, Michael Stanley, Cuyahoga County Fair, TSO - and mostly has fun doing it.  While the basketball lockout had us a little scared due to a lack of events during the winter season, the season is now back on and we hope there will be lots of events for him to work in the new year.

JR Drives
The time finally came in 2011, when JR needed to get a license again.  Living in the city had afforded him the luxury of not really needing one, but both for his new job and for my sanity, he needed to be able to drive legally again.  After a lot of practice and white knuckle-gripping (mostly on my part), and a perfect score driver's test, JR has his license again and now drives us and himself all about town.

We Moved
In May 2008, just months before JR and I were married, I packed my things an hour away in Akron and he packed his things across the neighborhood, and we moved into our first home together in Tremont.  We both love Tremont and it was a great place for us to spend our first years together, but the end of summer brought the end of our time in Tremont as well.  While we still loved the Tremont neighborhood and having so many friends so close, we were no longer in love with our immediate neighbors or how much we were paying in rent.  As no good and reasonable options could be found in Tremont, we started looking elsewhere in both Ohio City and Lakewood.

After almost settling on two different places in Ohio City, we finally made a decision to move to the lower of a duplex in Lakewood; it was the right price, a convenient location, a very personable landlord that only owns our house, and upstairs neighbors that we already knew that sealed the deal.  Both of us, as well as our families, were very nervous to move as it would be a substantial downsize, but it has been one of the best decisions we have ever made.  Our place in Lakewood, despite having less square-footage and less closet space, actually feels like a home and is much more our style. Plus, you really can't beat having great neighbors!

On Labor Day weekend, very shortly after we had moved in, we had friends over and it really solidified that we had made the right decision. Grilling and hanging out on our big porch was amazing, and it was so nice to feel like we had a home we could share with our friends.  JR and I have really settled in here in Lakewood and we look forward to many more happy months ahead here.

Year Four Starts Strong
This fall I began my fourth year at RLSD, though this is only my second year teaching Language Arts full-time.  I feel like this year I have really started to settle in and reach my stride.  Now that I am in a one-building position, not only are the kids getting to know me and respect me, but my peers are as well.  I feel like I have reached a point where students, parents, and other staff members see that I work hard, that I really love my job (most days), and that I'm actually good at doing my job.  It also feels like I also finally have the time to really give myself the opportunity to grow as a teacher by exploring my methods, new material, and professional development opportunities that are available.

I wouldn't say every day has been picture perfect, but it's been pretty amazing.  I have some students who I can tell really enjoy coming to my class (some have actually told me so!); I have students who show their appreciation for what I do; I have a great group of sophomores who I really enjoy working with that I advise for class fundraising; I've made progress with helping students to learn and improve; peers have sought me out to tell me they think I'm doing great things for our students; I've gotten to go to some wonderful plays at Playhouse Square through professional development; and my principal recommended me to be observed by a new teacher because of the quality of my work and also selected me to be a teacher-leader in the implementation of the new state language arts standards.  On a more personal level, I have also made some great connections with both a former student and a current student, and it is amazing and inspiring to see them both grow and learn and turn into the amazing adults I know they will both one day become.

Two Years Flies By
On October 3rd, JR and I quietly celebrated our two-year wedding anniversary.  It's hard to believe we are already well on our way to becoming an old married couple, but we love it.  I had hoped to be able to plan some sort of get-away for us, but things didn't fall in to place and that's OK; we have many more years together for all sorts of get-aways.

Our Family Grows
...though not in the way one might expect from that lead in!  Despite much apprehension on JR's part, in October we adopted a dog on a week-long trial basis.  Two days in, I knew there was no way he was ever going to let her leave.

I had heard about her through a friend on Facebook; she was a 3-4 year old Pomeranian who had been rescued from an Amish puppy mill.  Her foxy little face stole my heart from the minute I saw her picture, and hearing more about her from the lady who was fostering her had me convinced that she needed to be ours.  We went to meet her one rainy day, and I knew that I just needed to get JR on board.  She was sweet, cuddly, and loving - so much so that she snuggled between our legs and went to sleep that first time she met us.  I also felt she'd be a good fit for us because she was small, not a puppy, and already crate and house-trained.

Though a little anxious when we first brought her home, she has settled right in and is now queen of the castle.  We dubbed her Billie (she didn't really answer to the name she had at all) because JR observed her smirking much like Billy Idol is known to do, and we felt it fit her spunky attitude perfectly.  She now answers to her name, LOVES going on walks, and snuggles right in with both of us like a the little snuggle-bug she is.  She has made our house even more a home, brought us more love and smiles, and I have definitely become a true dog mom who is obsessed with her pup.

Despite the highs of 2011, I can easily admit that, no, the past year wasn't perfect; it has had its struggles and its challenges.  But I choose to focus on the triumphs and the positives.  I choose to focus on the things that went right, the good things that the year brought us, and the amazing people who have stood by me and come into my life this year.  The past year has truly blessed us, and I look forward to what the new year will bring us.  If I have one true wish for 2012, it is that no matter what the year brings, be it good or bad, that I will have the strength and the character to show love and appreciation for the good and to carry on through the bad with dignity.

Love and wishes of a happy new year to all,
Sarah

Day 06 - Describe My Day in Great Detail

This probably would have been more interesting had it been during the school year and not on summer break, but here goes nothing! :)

My hubby wakes me up sometime in the wee hours of the morn because I'm screaming in my sleep - bad dreams again.  At least this time I'm not yelling at students in my sleep...  Around 6:30am I wake up, but think my clock says 8:30am because I don't have my glasses on.  When I realize that it's only 6:30, I wonder where hubs is and realize that he's probably gotten up early to work out.  After going back to sleep for a while, hubs wakes me up at 8am like I asked, but I go back to dozing for about another hour before finally dragging myself out of bed.  Next it's time for some breakfast - a SlimFast shake so I don't pig out.  Plus, once you get used to the grittiness, they're pretty tasty! Then I check the email, Facebook, etc. and hop in the shower.  Just jeans and a Tshirt today as I'm not doing anything fancy.

Around 10:30 I drop JR off downtown and head over to CSU to pick up my graduate portfolio and Action Research Paper.  I get to Julka Hall and find out from the secretary that for some reason my stuff is not there.  Sweet.

More to come as the day progresses... :)

Day 05 - My Favorite Quote(s)

"In a completely rational society, the best of us would aspire to be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and the highest responsibility anyone could have." (Lee Iococca)
I think this one is pretty self-explanatory...

"The only people you need in your life are the ones who prove they need you in theirs." (Unknown)
I don't remember where I first heard this quote, but it has really stuck with me.  I guess it is because I struggled for many years with friendships where I felt I always valued the friendship more than the other person and that they were more important to me than I was to them.  I try to keep this quote in mind when I start feeling this way and to let people go who don't value me the way that I've valued them.

"Your clothes should be tight enough to show you're a woman, and loose enough to show you're a lady!" (My Grandmother)
I felt a funny quote was in order and this one is something that all ladies should live by :)

Day 04 - Worst Movie I Ever Saw

It might not be the worse movie I EVER saw, but it is the worse one I've watched recently.  Downright offensive even once they go abroad.
(I will update if I think of something worse.)

Healthy Cupcakes?

One of my cupcake recipe books has a section of "healthy" cupcake recipes.  While they still include butter and sugar, they all have some healthful element added in.  As a vegetarian always looking for new ways to get the protein I need, the recipe including quinoa particularly interested me as it is high in protein and essential amino acids.

Additionally, one of the teachers I work with is on a very restrictive gluten and dairy-free diet.  I have been wanting to try to make a cupcake that I could share with her and not just the other teachers.  While my quinoa cupcake recipe called for white flour, I had some soy flour on hand and have used it in a pinch when baking bread.  I looked up the conversion online - 3/4 soy flour to 1 cup white flour - and got ready to bake.

The original recipe is as follows:

Quinoa-Walnut Cupcakes
2 1/2 C white flour
1 1/2 t baking powder
1/2 t salt
1/2 C butter at room temperature
1 C sugar
3 T maple syrup
3 eggs
1 C cold cooked quinoa*
1 C coarsely chopped walnuts

*To prepare the quinoa you will also need 1 T oil, 1/2 C dry quinoa, and 3/4 C water.

Begin by preparing the quinoa.  In a medium pot, heat the oil for about 1 minute, then add the quinoa and stir for about 1 minute.  Add the water, bring to a boil, then lower heat and cover pot.  Cook over low heat for about 8 minutes until all the water has been absorbed.  Turn off heat and leave covered for about 5 more minutes until transferring to a bowl to cool completely.

When you are ready to begin, preheat oven to 325 degrees and place liners in pan.  For the cupcake batter, first mix flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl.  In a separate bowl then cream the butter, sugar, and maple syrup in a bowl until light and airy.  Then reduce the mixing speed to low and add eggs one at a time until well mixed. Gradually add the dry ingredients previously mixed together until you have a smooth batter.  Then add the cooked quinoa and walnuts, mixing well.  Fill the cupcake liners 2/3 full and bake for 20-25 minutes.  Cupcakes should be springy to the touch when done and left to cool for at least 10 minutes on a wire rack.
(Recipe taken from Cupcakes, Cupcakes & More Cupcakes by Lilach German)

Even using the soy flour they turned out quite tasty!  They were sweet with a cornbread-like texture because of the quinoa.  I left the walnuts out as my co-workers daughter has a nut allergy that prevents her from eating nuts.  I also made a maple syrup butter cream for those of us who can have dairy and it went nicely with the coarse cakes.  I highly recommend this recipe for anyone looking for a "healthy" cupcake to enjoy!

Day 03 - A Song That Makes You Cry

If you know me, you know this one is a toughie.  I love music and many songs, even ones that I don't personally relate to, can make me tear up, both because they are so sweet and because they are so sad.  Today though I think I'll focus on one that made me cry in a good way.

I have always loved - no adored - the song "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes.  It is simple and sweet, and most importantly, it is honest.  It doesn't paint a picture of a grandiose, fairy tale kind of love; it speaks of real and imperfect love.  When I met my husband he knew about Bright Eyes, but I don't think he was a big fan of the band the way I was.  Despite this, for our first Christmas one of my gifts was a special single edition of the song.  When he put it on and the song started playing, I started crying and I think I scared him -  he thought he had done something wrong.  But then I explained the reason for my tears.  Yes, it was his fault, but it was not because he had done something wrong.  It was because he had given me what I heard about in that song for so many years.

"First Day of My Life" now holds a special place in both our lives.  On October 3, 2009, we danced our first dance as husband and wife to this song.  Any time I hear it I both instantly smile and get a little teary.  And sometime I don't even have to hear it to feel that way - I feel the same way when JR is out somewhere and hears the song and I get a text message saying "Our song is on!"  In fact, I must admit that I've gotten a little teared up sitting here writing this.

Enjoy...

Day 02 - A Place I Hope to Visit

While I hope to someday see many parts of Europe, Alsace-Lorraine in the north of France is on the top of my list.  The Schelat side of my family originates from this area which changed hands between France and Germany throughout history.  I think it would be amazing to be able to explore an area that is a part of my ancestry.

Day 01 - A Celebrity that Inspires Me

Reading about his early life and career really inspired me to work hard and to stay true to who I am.  It also showed me that sometimes to get what you want you might need to temporarily compromise.

The end of an era...

Today marked the end of another era of my life: the grad school era.

Now I'm not saying I'm done with grad school for good, and anyone who knows anything about teaching (which given the news lately is probably not many) knows that I don't really have a choice about not continuing my education.  But my time as a true grad school student has ended (successfully I might add) and I am feeling so relieved.  I am relieved that I will have less stress and more free time.  I am relieved that I won't have to write any more 36-page research papers any time soon.  I am relieved that I can finally just focus on my teaching and my own personal life.

But, I must admit, I am also a little sad.

Though some may not know it, I actually began this degree quite some time ago.  Back in 2006, with a newly completed bachelor's degree and no real job, I could still attend Kent State tuition-free thanks to my dad's full-time employment there.  I started with some basic graduate education course online and then began coursework to earn a Master's degree in Gifted Education.  Then I ran into a problem: the GRE.  In order to be accepted into this program at Kent, I had to take the GRE.  The GRE has math on it.  I hadn't taken math since junior year... of high school.  So after 12 hours of graduate work - the most you can complete on a guest admission - my grad school career ground to a halt.  Luckily by then I had an ok job and was moving forward with my life.

Then came Rootstown.  When my alma mater hired me, I was to teach both gifted and public speaking.  As I did not have a degree in gifted ed, I was required to begin coursework again in order to be licensed to teach it.  As the math portion of the GRE still had me scared stiff, I began to research my options.  Hello CSU.  Because of my undergrad GPA and my confidence in my ability to maintain a high GPA in grad school, I was able to join the graduate gifted program at CSU without having to take the dreaded test.

That was in Fall 2009.  Two years later, I am officially done, and though the relief is washing over me, I am a little sad that it is the end.  Grad school has consumed so much of my energy and my time over the past two years, that I can't help but miss it a little.  Notice I said  a little.

That being said, I am quite proud of my accomplishment.  It really hit me this morning how much I have accomplished.  I have grown so much since I began this process.  I am now (at least I hope I am) the type of teacher I always hoped to be, but only dared to dream I actually could.  And I am so proud of myself because it has not been without hard work, dedication, and sacrifice.  That is not the only reason I am proud though.  This morning it also hit me that, as with my bachelor's, I am the first person in my dad's bloodline to earn a Master's degree.  And in my family, that's kind of a big deal.

To the end of an era...
and on to the next.  I hope it brings me half as much satisfaction as this one has.
